Brief History of New Frontier Treatment Center
In 1971, Churchill County residents banded together to form the Churchill Council on Alcohol and Other Drugs, consisting of seven Board Members and one full-time Substance Abuse Counselor.
In 1974, the Board of Directors negotiated with Churchill County and opened the New Frontier Treatment Center. The facility contained 14 beds, and could house 7 men and 7 women at any given time. Staffing consisted of a Director and 3 Counselors.
Nearly 25 years later, in 1997, a loan from the USDA facilitated new construction, and the occupancy capacity increased to 20 beds. There was also a marked evolution in staff qualifications. New Frontier attracted staff from a variety of academic backgrounds including Social Sciences, Administration and Finance.
In 2007, a catastrophic fire burnt New Frontier to the ground.
In October of 2008, New Frontier moved into it’s new location at 1490 Grimes Street in Fallon with a capacity of 28 beds. Over the years offices and services have been expanded to Lovelock, Elko, Wendover and Caliente/Pioche.

For more than 44 years, New Frontier has been providing behavioral health services including mental health, drug, alcohol, and gambling treatment services to rural Nevada residents. Behavioral health touches the lives of many individuals and their families so addressing this issue is not simple or easy. Breaking the cycle of addiction, poverty, homelessness, trauma and abuse that plague so many in our community takes unwavering hard work and support from our Board, our staff, our volunteers, our donors and all of you, our community.
New Frontier’s mission has been dedicated to promoting individual and community wellness through a comprehensive continuum of substance abuse, behavioral health and other wellness services. Its vision is to provide quality evidence-based mental health and addiction treatment, prevention and behavioral health services to rural Nevadans through existing programs and continued expansion. At New Frontier we take this mission and vision very seriously. Standing together our team remains true to our core mission to help individuals and families heal from the trauma that has led them to seek our help. We can and do make a difference.
As New Frontier’s Executive Director, I am pleased to share that we have had yet another extraordinary year full of accomplishments, memorable events and life changing experiences. We have experienced much growth and change since our early days as an alcohol treatment program. Our new Room for Ruth Transitional House for Women provides an amazing opportunity for women in recovery and offers not only housing but is a safety net to support these women in making a successful transition to self-sufficient living.
By whatever referral that brings our clients to our door they are greeted by a compendium of programs and services including case management for housing/homelessness, employment/job training, education/GED, food/emergency food pantry, clothing, transportation, child reunification/ visitation and child care, parenting, primary health and mental health services and life skills training.
New Frontier is an accredited organization through the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) since 2006.
We cannot do this alone. As a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, financial support is greatly needed and would be very much appreciated. We hope that all individuals and corporations will consider supporting our endeavors in 2016 and beyond.
Lana K. Robards
Executive Director
